An obscure bit-player from radio history is the focus of today’s show, as we replay classic bits from his radio broadcasts from the late ’90’s, and from his one appearance in 2006. Ladies & Gentlemen, I speak of none other than Mr. Holden Craft himself (pictured here, on the left).
This one has a special place in my heart, as Holden is one of my oldest friends, and really knows how to craft a great Shaggy Dog story.
Tune in next week, as I present something that has yet to be determined at this point! Can you stand the excitement?
Another two-hour adventure today on the radio, this time with local experimental / ambient / drone artists, Mangled Bohemians!
Mangled Bohemians might win the award for one of the nicest bands I’ve ever met, though there are several groups vying for that position currently, so we’ll just say that you won’t be annoyed by any rock star pretension, or uncomfortable behavior from so-called “noise” artists. These guys love music, love making music, and love playing it for you. What more could you ask for?
Tune in next week for a special look back at an obscure character for Blasphuphmus Radio history, Mr. Holden Craft himself. Don’t know who he is? Well, tune in next week, and find out!
The Man of Steel is always vigilant, working night and day to keep America safe from evildoers everywhere, and this week, he’s trying to stop The Yellow Mask as he shows up again to wreck havoc in a town that could very well have been your own. Ladies and Gentlemen, covering for What’s This Called?, I bring you a two-hour, six-part extravaganza, The Mystery Of Dyerville!
See ya in seven!
The Adventures of Superman Part V!: The Mystery of Dyerville
Episode 16: The Prison Riot * 18 March 1940 Episode 17: The Steam Plant * 20 March 1940 Episode 18: The Wolfe vs the Yellow Mask * 22 March 1940 Episode 19: The Yellow Mask Escapes * 25 March 1940 Episode 20: The Mystery of Dyerville (1 of 2) * 27 March 1940 Episode 21: The Mystery of Dyerville (2 of 2) * 29 March 1940
The Yellow Mask, clearly having survived the airplane crash, has teamed up with The Wolfe and Keno, to begin causing “accidents” in the city of Dyerville, while Clark Kent and Lois Lane are sent to investigate this jinxed town.
Episode 036: The Grumpy Punk Part II (In which I wax nostalgic with a lot of new and old “punk” songs, and the censor beep goes off far too often.)
Another extended block of radio yesterday, and this time filled with more music, “Like they usta make.” Ob-soive:
I like the fact that it took me two shows before I was actually able to get back on track with the schedule I had written for myself only a few weeks ago. Yeah, like I said, “tentative.” Hopefully, we’ll be on track until the end of the years.
Very rarely have I done shows that were over two hours long, so this week was quite a surprise for everyone. First, the listeners, who got a three hour version of a 60 minute show. Then, for myself, who had THE POPE of the Church of Blasphuphmus (featured to the right, with myself, in our old Cathead days) show up to join him for 2 1/2 of those three hours. And finally, the space time continuum was rocked as I retrocasted a show, the premise of which was about the past intersecting with the present and the future as it itself was already retrocasting material from a similar show. Confused? Well, you soon won’t be.
Next, we move on to another Live Performance by The Woolen Men, this time on my own show. This show is spread out over two hours to accommodate the band during sound check. The first 25 minutes of the first hour include PDX Pop Selections. Additionally, only the first 16 minutes of the second hour have Woolen Men antics.
Whew. I’m beat. Good thing radio like this only happens once a week.
First, we feature a live performance by Knot Pine Box on What’s This Called?, featuring some of the most incredible guitar improvisation I’ve seen in quite some time.
Episode 031: Handed Down From On High
(Where I play a bunch of stuff that I wanted to hear, despite that being a direct violation of an order from the heads of Blasphuphmus Radio.)
What happens when even a left-leaning media organization tries to impose ridiculous broadcasting suggestions to their lowly peons? The answer to that question lies in this week’s episode.
No theme, no gimmick, no special guests. Just a lot of awesome, awesome music, flying in the face of those who think they run the show. This one, fortunately, ROCKS!
To make up for missing my regular broadcast yesterday, I increased the cast of my show two-fold as I brought in two of my blood relations to help DJ the hour away. Let me introduce you to Karly and Kyle Rich, appearing during a special Sunday coverage broadcast (covering PDX Soundtracks, the show on Sundays at 3 PM).
Next week we’ll be back at our regular day and time, so tune in for a DJ set like none other.
On this date, Cam (a KPSU DJ and guitar player in the fantastic duo, Guyve) covered my program while I was out of town. Humorously, he introduced the show as Blasphuphmus Radio, and as our tastes run parallel (or, even, nearly identical), I found the results rather amusing. Cam is a great guy, and I wish our schedules were more compatible so we could do stuff like this more often.
Sound Collage consisting of much more audio than is listed here… Add one package of purplish hot dogs to blender. Blend until smooth. Spread on bread or your favorite friend and add Velveeta. Great with Shrimp flavored Ramen Noodles, too!
There was a time when Blasphuphmus Radio was two hours every week, and the chance to pick up an extra hour these days causes me to look back to where I’ve been before. Going back to the first show I did this year, which could have been sub-titled “Radio About Radio,” I thought I would revisit the subject and attempt to put a new spin on it in the process. The results: “A Sound Salvation,” a two-hour audio-essay on the nature of being a Radio DJ itself, with special insight by none other than author and DJ Mike Staff! Want to get started in radio? Then this is the place to start!
Back in January, I was only able to fit in a handful of songs I’d found that all deserved airplay, and this show seemed like a perfect chance to put those other songs on the air. One thing I found was a pair of narrated cassettes that purported to explain how to become a Radio DJ (and how to make a Demo Tape). I originally planned on including samples from these tapes in that first show, but a variety of factors left the tapes on the cutting room floor. One of the first things I reached for when I began work on this show were those tapes, and they make up the backbone of the show this week. This show could very well be sub-titled, “How To Become A Radio DJ,” but I feared that might create the wrong impression (either seriously, or sarcastically). I figured an Elvis Costello quote would not only send the right message, but hopefully put the samples in context.
I have to say, if it wasn’t already clear enough, this show forefronts my interest (and borderline obsession) with Negativland, and their own weekly radio show, Over The Edge. I’ve been a fan since the mid ’90’s, and have made an effort to listen as often as possible ever since. Over the years I’ve collected a number of recordings of their shows, and have often considered them a major influence on me. The problem is, to do a show like thier’s, you need a LOT of free time, and while I have made a lot of efforts to do something like they would do, it hasn’t always worked out that way. With a full week of free time at my disposal to prepare for this show, I was finally able to pick out and rehearse enough material to step up to the challenge. So, if you like what you hear, and you want to hear something weirder and / or more extreme, Over The Edge on KPFA (in Berkley, though they do stream and podcast it) is well worth your time and effort. Seriously.
This show includes a lot of music that wouldn’t normally appear on Blasphuphmus Radio, and while this isn’t a disclaimer (or even a warning), it seems that a bit of explanation might be in order. My musical interests range far and wide, and I’ve always imagined that at it’s most bizarre and cogent, my show enables a listener to draw a through-line between Bruce Springsteen, Shellac, Wall of Voodoo, Nirvana, Rudimentary Peni, Jet, Kraftwerk, Queens of The Stone Age, and Ornette Coleman. Of course, this is just my particular view of the musical universe, and I wouldn’t go so far as to claim that everyone can make those connections (or would even want to). For those more cynical than I, some of the cornier musical moments are included as “found sounds” that reinforce this Radio Essay; for those less cynical than I, the weirder and stranger moments are included as “found sounds” that, also, reinforce this Essay. I think the mish-mash makes perfect sense, if you consider the subject. Think about it…
I wanna thank Ricardo Wang for giving up his show this week so I could produce something like this, and Michelle Pecchia, Nil Admirari, Heather Hunt-Garrison, DJ Victrola, Steven Koriagin, Jennifer Howell, Shayna Proctor, Kyle Rich, Megan Kent, Reverend Marc Time (from our sister station, KWVA in Eugene), Alpha Protist, Heidi Stauber, Melissa Cooper, Jenna Lynn, Minded Rock Gate, and DJ Medusa, who all made suggestions for songs that should have been included in this show. If I didn’t use your suggestion, don’t sweat; I’ll probably use it next time. This series has some serious future potential.
Next week Blasphuphmus Radio will be coming to you 23 hours later than usual, as various schedule changes will temporarily move from from Saturday at 1 PM to Sunday at 12 Noon. But on Sunday, tune in for Part II of a previous series, A Family Affair, featuring not one, not three, but TWO of my siblings, joining me on the air. Can you believe the excitement?
See ya in seven.

A slew of live performances prevented us from finishing The North Star Mining Company storyline from the classic radio serial, The Adventures of Superman. But fear not, for today we conclude this story in Part IV of our new series, and include a variety of music with this broadcast, all from the time period in question. It’s that extra step that we love to take to bring you your radio entertainment.
Not only will you find three episodes of vintage Old Time Radio from March, 1940, but contemporary commercials, too. Another shoutout goes to archive.org, my supplier for all these wonderful sounds. I should point out that I used a variety of recording methods to recreate the “Old Time” sound, so this episode in particular is going to sound a little strange. I think, by the time we get around to doing Part V, I will have perfected the style.
I also have to thank Ricardo Wang, not only for giving me ideas of how I could present this episode, but for being the excellent radio fill-in host that he always is. No Skinny Ties was great last week, and for that, I commend you. Lastly: thank you Isosceles Diego, who let me record this episode in his house while he was out of town. The echo was, at times, perfect.
This one’s a shocker, and includes a huge twist to the ongoing story at the very end! You won’t want to miss this.
Tune in and follow the story…
See you in seven.
The Adventures of Superman Part IV
Episode 13: The Steamship Madison * 11 March 1940
The crooks who work at The North Star Mining Company board the Madison to retrieve the documents that could blackmail them, but Superman arrives to rescue the captain of the steamship
Episode 14: Plane to Canyon City * 13 March 1940
Clark Kent takes a plane to Canyon City in order to stop the crooks who run The North Star Mining Company
Episode 15: Left to be Killed 15 March 1940
The crooks behind The North Star Mining Company have their plan entirely backfire, and everything winds up just fine. For now.
Even though I was out of town for my usual show this week, there was a two-fold treat for those who just can’t get enough Blasphuphmus Radio. Live, in the studio, Ricardo Wang did a special two-hour version of No Skinny Ties in honor of our Nation’s most important celebration. Those of you who tuned in live got to experience that. However, there is also an internet-only treat for the truly dedicated listener.
This is one of my all-time favorite shows, and now it can be yours, too, with a mere Inter-Web-A-Tron download. Can you believe it?
Tune in next week, when I actually DJ an hour of radio for a change of pace. What will happen? Who can say? Tune in and find out.
There are some days that actually contain a larger rock quotient than others. Today was one of those days. Whew! Where to begin? It’s always such a pleasure to see awesome live music performed by awesome people. Hell yeah.
As promised, this week Honey Vizer stormed the KPSU studios and took over for an entire hour. Relive the magic through the miracle of modern technology! Behold!
If ever there was a Blasphuphmus Radio podcast you needed to download featuring a Lizard Girl performing human-style country and folk music, this is the one. Seriously.
First, at noon, I guest hosted What’s This Called? today, which is always a treat. But in this case, it was extra-special, because we had a live guest, all the way from Barcelona, Spain: Santiago Latorre! While I wish I could take credit for booking this one, I did run sound, host the show, and conduct a short interview at the end. This was a lot of fun, and definitely not to be missed.
KPSU is in the middle of Pledge Drive this week, and because of that, I’ve got a double dose of Live Radio for you. No need to thank me; just go to your local Inter-Web-A-Tron Outlet, and down-load, download, dwnld. Ob-soive:
This week, on Blasphuphmus Radio, we redefine the meaning of the words “family radio” with a very special broadcast, with a very special guest: my sister, Karly.
This time, I let her run the show, and play all her favorite songs, inspired by the Ben Folds show we saw last night. Be prepared for the only hour of “family radio” that you might have to preview before playing for your children.
Looking for some new local music? Then look no further, because today’s special two-hour broadcast features two artists from the local Battlesnakes Collective!
I’d be careful if I were you. These snakes are dangerous.
Just because they didn’t this time, doesn’t mean they won’t! The perfect soundtrack to an alien invasion, UFO sighting, romantic evening for two, or merely something to put on when you’re bumming around the house.
I ran sound today for Abusive Delay during What’s This Called? It’s always fun to do sound for Ricardo’s bands, as they are generally off the beaten path, and not your typical musician anyway. If you want some weird, electronic, sometimes ambient, somethings aggressive noise, music, then this is the show for you.
Almost 11 years ago, Austin Rich & Holden Craft did the worst thing imaginable, live on the radio. But today, the past has (finally) caught up with him.
Follow me and Ken Nordine as we lead you on a wonderful trip through The Sound Museum!
This is one of the most personal episodes I’ve done since I got back to radio. Most of these songs are really important to me, for one reason or another, and while some of the transitions were a little faulty, the ending almost entirely makes up for that.
A couple of scheduling-problems later, we finally managed to get Mortal Engines on the air again, with new material, and an interview! I love doing live radio, and the main reason is when I can get bands on the air.
Mortal Engines is the perfect Sci-Fi Soundtrack Music, half down-tempo electro and half exploring the nebulae of deep space, so if that’s up your alley, then down load this baby now!
This one only just made it on the air, but when you’ve got Superman on your side, things just get done. I always love doing these Superman shows.
It’s been far too long since Blasphuphmus Radio Theater Presents! was on the air, and with a lull in my broadcast schedule, I decided to finally bring listeners Part III. At times various circumstances seemed to be conspiring against this broadcast, but in the end it all came together, and without a moment to spare.
I need to make a correction in the footnotes from Part II: “The Yellow Mask” storyline is only three episodes long, rather than the six I claimed. One thing I’ve noticed regarding Old Time Radio is that documentation is often hard to find, so I’m slowly piecing all of this together as I go. This things happen, but fortunately this means that this episode concludes that story, and begins a new one, referred to by some fans as “The North Star Mining Company.” Again, to keep with tradition, I included more music by Raymond Scott to use as a backing track, which is always a good addition to any broadcast.
To keep with tradition I dug up some Old Time Commercials, and also managed to get a couple of KPSU DJs to make a pair of drops that were debuted during this broadcast. These episodes are always fun to do, but are somewhat time-consuming to throw together. I can’t say when I’ll be doing another one, but hopefully it’ll be soon.
See ya in seven!
The Adventures of Superman Part III!
Episode 9: Threat to the Planet Building * 1 March 1940
Superman manages to stop The Yellow Mask’s plan, and causes his plane to crash. But The Yellow Mask’s body is not found among its wreckage.
Episode 10: Fire in the Sterling Building * 4 March 1940
Superman rescues a woman from a burning building, and takes her to a hospital.
Episode 11: The Stabbing of June Anderson * 6 March 1940
The girl that superman rescued – June Anderson – is stabbed in the hospital by two of the crooks who run The North Star Mining Company.
Episode 12: North Star Mining Company * 8 March 1940
June has given her brother – a captain on The Steamship Madison – some documents that will bring to justice the people who run The North Star Mining Company.
Running sound for Ricardo Wang’s show is always a blast. Death Worth Living is a sort of jazzy and droney, and was actually a lot of fun to do sound for.
Johnathan Boober, host of PDX Soundtracks, invited me to talk shop as we talked about some of our favorite Hits and Misses amongst bands that we are fans of. On tap: Deerhunter, Grails, The Jezebel Spirit, & Nick Cave. John and I thought it would be a great idea to give music-talk a chance at KPSU, and now you can tune in and tell us how we did.
My friend Georgette joins me for an hour of music by International female artists, representing six of the seven continents, and featuring only one American (singing in French, mind you). It’s a pretty interesting set, all courtesy of Georgette.
While you were probably a bit disappointed to find that Mortal Engines did not perform live on the air today (as I suggested they might), hopefully you weren’t too disappointed with the awesome selection of tunes the higher ups tossed down my way that needed to be played NOW! So, here it is.
This one rocks in a sort of mellow, late-at-night / existential kind of way, which actually doesn’t explain anything about what you can expect to hear, except that you won’t be surprised when you get to Nick Cave or Joy Division.
Put on your spurs, ’cause it’s time to go dancin’! Tune in for an hour of downhome, in-yer-face, just like grandma used to make Cow Punk this week on Blasphuphmus Radio, with special guest DJ Jazzy Joel of Alpha Protist! Yee-ha!
I had a really great time.
Whew. I’m all radio-ed out. I gotta say, it was a good day.
Check out today’s spine-tingling radio show, ready in popular “monophonic .mp3 download” format. As many of you probably know, this man has the coolest taste in music, is the most attractive man in the Portland area, and my oldest and dearest friend in the whole wide world. I wouldn’t be half the man I am without him. (The good half, that is.) We busted out an hour’s worth of tunes that you won’t soon forget, so download it now and be the first on your block to experience

And while you’re at it: I ran sound today for What’s This Called?, because today Howlin’ Houndog and His Infamous Loosers played! It was a pretty damn cool show, so if you like Beefheartian-Roots Rock, then you should also download this show.
Due to the recent schedule change for Blasphuphmus Radio, I was unable to bring you Part II of “The Adventures of Superman” on February 17th. But fear not, because Part II is here, today, and not a moment too soon!
In this episode, we wrap up the first, six-part storyline, known to some fans simply as “The Wolfe.” Later, as the series progressed, individual episodes lost their names, and were merely titled “Storyline Title (Part x of y).” Since I felt it would be ideal to summarize the events brought to you in Part I, you also get a sample of authentic radio music from that period from the legendary Raymond Scott. What more could you ask for?
In Part II, we also begin the second six-part storyline, known to some fans as “The Yellow Mask.” As was typical in radio serials, the last episode of the previous storyline actually foreshadows the next storyline, making sure that each episode ends with a cliffhanger. If all goes well, we should be able to wrap up this storyline in Part III, which will be brought to you sometime in March (TBA).
It should be noted that I made a mistake in announcing “The Atomic Beam Machine,” merely calling it “The Atomic Beam.” One of the difficulties with the Inter-Web-A-Tron is that you get conflicting information depending on who you talk to. So, the correct name is “The Atomic Beam Machine,” regardless of what I say on the broadcast.
Also noteworthy about that episode is that it’s the first appearance of Lois Lane in the series. Originally played by Rollie Bester, she only stayed with the series for this particular storyline. She ends up being replaced starting with the next storyline. Even though there was a character named “Jimmy” in episode two (“Clark Kent, Mild Mannered Reporter”), Jimmy Olsen – the last of the show’s primary characters – has yet to make an appearance. I find it particularly interesting that none of the primary character – or even voice actors – appeared in the first episode (“The Baby From Krypton”). Since this kind of slow development would probably never happen in modern stories like this, I find it particularly noteworthy.
Again, I dug up some Old Time Commercials to flesh out the overall feel and sound of this broadcast. I think I managed to only use commercials from the year of – or before – these episodes were originally broadcast, but I don’t really know. If anyone else has and further information about these, please, let me know!
See ya in seven!
The Adventures of Superman Part II
Episode 5: Locomotive Crew Freed * 21 February 1940
Clark Kent overhears Keno & The Wolfe’s plans, waits for them to leave, then rescues the kidnapped train crew as Superman.
Episode 6: The Silver Clipper * 23 February 1940
Thanks to the work of Superman, Keno & The Wolfe are finally arrested. But Clark Kent receives a phone call from The Wolfes boss, The Yellow Mask!
Episode 7: The Atomic Beam Machine * 26 February 1940
The Yellow Mask steals The Atomic Beam Machine from Professor Sven Dalgren. Lois Lane is also introduced in this episode!
Episode 8: Fuel * 28 February 1940
While Clark Kent and Lois Lane are investigating Professor Sven Dalgren, The Wolfe threatens to destroy The Daily Planet.
Things have been pretty hectic in radioland lately, so I feel pretty bad about not plugging Wednesday’s live, on-air event before it actually happened. But, fear not! The Inter-Web-A-Tron offers the wonders of the past in the present… or the future! And in this case, it’s good that we can unite all three, because I was able to run sound for the only Cramps tribute band in Portland, Bikini Girls With Machine Guns!
With the recent passing of Lux Interior, there have been a number of radio tributes (including one on my own show, still archived here at the end of the hour), but with a live performance by an actual tribute band, you more or less can’t go wrong. Especially with the choice of musicians filling out the band: half of the sorely-missed Eat Your Heart Out combined with all of the still-amazing Hairspray Blues. Of course, hosting it on Ranger Mike’s signal-to-noise ratio was an excellent choice, and of course, having the wonderful Miss Meghan return to radio as Mike’s co-host was just the icing on the cake. (Meghan hosted the very-much-missed Songs The Lord Taught Us show before she decided to travel the world for a few years.) All in all, it was the COOLEST hour of radio that’s been broadcast in quite some time, and you would be remiss in your duties as an American not to listen.
I didn’t think it was possible either, but I managed to do an entire show on Valentine’s Day and not once did resorted to cynicism and irony! This was a really challenging show to program, but fortunately this year I actually have someone to celebrate with, and that helped point me in the right direction. Thanks babe!
Next week, stay tuned for the return of Blasphuphmus Radio Theater Presents! With the return of, “The Adventures of Superman, Part II.”
See ya in seven.

New Day! New Time! Old Songs! This is a great show to start with, if you’ve been curious about Blasphuphmus Radio. It gives you the flavor of the kind of stuff I do in a new, Portland / Vancouver Metro Area kind of way.
Next week: I tackle the big VD with “Songs For My Baby.”
Today’s episode of Blasphuphmus Radio asks the question: where have all the Groundhog songs gone?
Well, there’s still six more weeks of winter according to February 2nd lore, so today I’m featuring songs about Ground, Hogs, and Shadows. Who knows how much longer this season will last? Only the Groundhog’s Shadow, knows! Bwahahahahahahahahaha!
I was absolutely shocked at how little Groundhog music there was to play for this show. Any musicians out there looking for something to write about, now’s your chance!
About halfway through the show I give a rambling and disjointed history of Groundhog Day. Most of the information was culled from several passes over the Inter-Web-A-Tron, so it’s as reliable as anyone else is these days.
I think I prefer the second half of the show myself.
Lastly: this is my last show during the 3 PM slot on Tuesdays. The powers that be have given me a chance to shine on the citywide broadcast signal, starting this Saturday, February 7th! So if you live in the Portland area, tune in at 1450 AM on Saturday in the Portland / Vancouver metro area (just after What’s This Called?), and 98.1 FM on the Portland State University Campus, to hear me do what I do best. You can also stream the show live at kpsu.org.
Those of you who podcast the show: nothing changes. You’ll just start getting the shows on Saturday instead of Tuesday.
Saturday’s show is tentatively titled, “Re-Introduction, Again.” Pleased to meet you… won’t you guess my theme?
Don’t forget audience participation: 503-725-4945. You, too, can be on the radio!
Last night, on Ranger Mike’s signal-to-noise ratio, The Vibrarians stopped by for a live set, and I was lucky enough to run sound and catch their awesome live set. Rumor has it that they’re playing at Rotture (with Hornet Leg, Wallpaper, & Lake), so if you like what you hear, you should totally check ’em out.
(Photo to the right by Ricardo Wang, on May 3rd, 2008, as they appeared on What’s This Called?)
In a new feature on Blasphuphmus Radio, we present the first four episodes of the 1940 radio classic, The Adventures of Superman! I’m an Old Time Radio fan, and have long lamented the fact that there are no stations (that I know of) that play any kind of Radio Theater anymore. (Outside of occasional NPR features.) To remedy this situation, once a month I’ll broadcast various Old Time Radio features, starting with one of my favorites.
Radio in the 1940’s was a very different medium than it is now. On WOR Radio (in New York), the popular shows included scripted features of various types and varieties, vaudevillian variety shows, news programs, and live Big Band music in the evenings. (These performances were then used as recorded music for the early morning broadcasts.) Since a lot of shows didn’t last long, writers and producers were constantly looking for new ideas to try out on the air. Eventually, Producer Frank Chase and Writer George Ludlum hit upon the idea to adapt the then-new Comic Book Character, Superman. Once they found Clayton “Bud” Collyer – who became the voice of Superman – they immediately began producing episodes.
On February 12th, 1940 a few voice actors and foley artists stood around a microphone and recorded the first episode of The Adventures of Superman. Humorously, this first episode lacks the primary characters and voices that would appear in all the future episodes, but by Valentine’s Day – with Bud Collyer voicing Clark Kent – the show became a hit.
The Adventures of Superman aired during the 5 PM hour on most of the stations that carried the show. (Depending on their schedules, it might be heard locally at 5, 5:15, 5:30, or 5:45.)
Most of the information here was pieced together from various different web resources, and I retrieved the episodes I broadcast today from archive.org, which hosts a lot of Old Time Radio using a Creative Commons License. Everything is available for download, free to all. The drawback of Old Time Radio Recordings online, however, is an issue of quality: the limitations of the technology of 1940, combined with the limitations in recording preservation over the years, combined with the limitations of primitive .mp3 encoding from whenever these files were created, have all conspired to create sub-par sounding audio. Of course, in many cases, we’re lucky to have these recordings at all, and as we’ll find out as this series progresses, there are many episodes from the WWII era that do not exist, in any form. (Shades of Dr. Who to come…)
As a Comic Book fan from way back, this show holds a special place in my heart. (Mostly because there was never a Green Lantern show, and this was the next best thing.) I used to have a series of four cassettes that contained at least 20 of the first episodes of the show, and I used to wonder how people could really love something that hokey. Now that I’ve had a few years to percolate on the subject, I’m wondering what I found hokey about them, then.
Throughout the show I inserted some Old Time Radio Commercials to add to the feel of the broadcast. The only commercial I know for a fact was actually broadcast during The Adventures of Superman was the Kellog’s Pep ad at the beginning. (They originally sponsored the show.) The others, unfortunately, could be from any time period (and region of the US – radio was extremely regional in those days), and therefore, may be anachronistic. (The Pepsi commercial, I realize after having done further research, may be from the early 1950s. My bad.) I hope no one calls me on it, and if they do, I hope they don’t feel too cheated. Really, I tried.
Unfortunately, I found two different ways to record my Old Time Voice Overs, and due to a crunch in production time, I had to leave them both in. I think second batch of recordings sound more Old Time-y, but then again, it might be completely unnoticeable with broadcast radio compression and podcasting .mp3 compression. We’ll see.
If there are any Old Time Radio aficionados that can help out a relatively newish fan, please, contact me! I would be most appreciative of a brain to pick about this fascinating time in Radio History.
This one was a lot of fun, and I can’t wait for Part II of the story, which will air on February 17th. Twice the excitement! Tune In, patient listeners!

Obama-Rama! Inauguration Day Special, 2009! Political Music For Political Times!
I have to admit, I haven’t looked forward to an Inauguration Day for as long as I can remember, so it was really cool to put together a mix for a show like this. And, of course, a huge challenge, too. Having never gotten “political” on my show before, and having never put together a mix like this ever before, I was nervous and cautious as to what I should play. I wanted to focus on somewhat optimistic songs looking to the future, pausing only three times to really put in any amount of critique. It have to say, it was not easy; most of the time, when artists get political, the results are rarely pretty.
Suffice it to say, I think I managed to put together a really stunning selection of tunes to welcome our new President. I hope, if nothing else comes across in this broadcast, that I convey my sincere hope that the future is going to be all the more interesting with Mr. Obama in the White House.
Now, onto the show:
1.) Slightly Newish Opening. I’m still trying to get this right. I’ll probably fool around with new variations on this as the show develops. If anyone out there wants to try their hand at it too, I would be much obliged.
2.) “The American In Me.” (The Avengers) This might be difficult to believe, but I consider myself a patriot, and I think that almost anyone who is critical of the government needs to also come to terms with the fact that WE Are The Government. “Ask not what you can do for your country, but what your country can do unto you.” I’m almost positive that the Avengers wanted that song to sound critical of the current government, but I like to think that it’s also loaded with a second meaning: WE are in control of who has the power, not the other way around.
3.) “Presidents Of The Past.” The first big segment of the show is dedicated to songs about Presidents of the past. There are two extremely critical songs in this segment (“Another Political Poem” & “Ronald Reagan”), and my only real defense is that they are both meant largely as jokes: King Missile III is described as, if anything, a Novelty Act, and Men’s Recovery Project wrote a song critical of Reagan in the mid 90’s, which can hardly be topical no matter how you analyze the lyrics. (Side note: reversing the swears from poorly-recorded seven-inch is hard enough, but I realized that in the process of doing so, I actually drew more attention to the swear than if I had just let it play on it’s own. Oh well.)
I guess the biggest problem with the songs featured here is that they are all presented as humorous. Even They Might Be Giants’ earnest attempt to tell the life story of James K. Polk is hard to take seriously when you consider this is the same band that brought us “Particle Man” and a hit single about a night light. Even when I try to take politics seriously, it’s hard not to go for the joke first.
I end this segment with a song by Elton & Betty White, “If I Were The President.” While I thank DJ Revolting Earwig on the air for introducing me to this particular song, I must thank Cheryl Albrect for introducing me to Elton & Betty originally. She came into a copy of their “Sex Beyond The Door” cassette when she used to be a journalist in the late 80’s, and has been turning people on to their music ever sense. DJ Revolting Earwig discovered Elton & Betty through her, and eventually uncovered another cassette album, “The Best Of Elton & Betty” through diligent Inter-Web research. Rumor has it that Elton & Betty will have a new boxed set released soon, despite a lack of input from Elton White’s manager. We’ll see if this ever comes to fruition.
4.) “Running For Mayor.” I went through a huge Jello Biafra phase when I lived in Eugene, and collected almost all of his albums when I worked at Barnes & Noble. I was so inspired by his “Runny For Mayor” story that I began a ‘zine campaign that required me to do some legal research at City Hall, and I toyed with the idea of running for a City Council position as part of a ‘zine project. At least, enough to start looking into the process. It wasn’t too much later that moving to Portland became an option, and so I quickly abandoned the idea in favor of setting up shop in PDX. However, the story has always stuck with me as one of my favorites, and it seemed appropriate given it was Inauguration Day. Hopefully, someone will be inspired to carry on the flame. The music behind Jello Biafra is from John Carpenter’s “Escape From New York” Expanded Soundtrack, which includes cues named, “President at the Train,” “Romero and the President,” and “The President Is Gone.” I felt it was appropriate, given the eerie paranoia present in both Biafra & Carpenter’s music.
5.) “Looking To The Future.” This is probably the most convoluted segment of the show. I was trying really hard to be optimistic, yet Patriotic, and it was really hard to walk that fine line without resorting to the kind of critical songs I played in the first segment. So, I went a little broad, and tried to include “America” in some way, while trying to grab some of that upbeat feeling I was trying to capture. (I did this with the background music throughout, too.) I don’t know if I entirely succeeded, but it’s a good mix of songs that I love, and sometimes that’s what counts. I was particularly proud of getting “Surf Wax America” in the set; I’m a huge fan of the first few Weezer albums, and this song in particular captures the bittersweet-pessimism-with-a-hint-of-hope that really embodies how I feel about politics as a whole.
Anyway, I hope you dug the show. Don’t expect too much more politics in the near future. It’s not my specialty, and more to the point, I’d much rather focus on other things.
Thanks again for everyone who tuned in. Next week, get ready for the premiere episode of “Blasphuphmus Radio Theater Presents,” which begins retrocasting the 1940 classic radio serial, “The Adventures Of Superman!” Audience Participation could be really, really promising on this one…

As a long-time contributor to KPSU, one of the many skills I’ve picked up is that of running live sound. Between running Live Friday for two years, hosting bands on my own show – in addition to helping out other DJs with their bands – has given my a rather large musical portfolio that the Way-Back Machine gives me access to. I’ve always felt it was unfair to leave these recordings to lie in their musty storage bins, so I’ve decided to occasionally feature my best live recordings on this very show.
This week we have recordings by Tea For Julie & Derek M. Johnson. Tea For Julie is a new-ish indie-pop group that came into KPSU to perform on Rachelle’s “Anti-Apathy” show on November 24th, 2008. (Two days before Thanksgiving.) Normally they’re a full ensemble, but for this performance, they appeared as a two-piece for a spooky, reverb-drenched sound. Fans of the group will be excited to hear their songs stripped-down, and to hear their casual and friendly interview clips afterward. For more information, check out their page at http://www.myspace.com/teaforjulie.
Derek M. Johnson, however, is another matter entirely. As a solo experimental cellist, Derek skirts a much less mainstream sound that involves looping pedals, effects of all shapes and kinds, and when appropriate, actual cello sounds, too. Derek came to PDX on December 7th, 2008 (Pearl Harbor Day) to promote his show that evening, and to play a live set on Ricardo Wang’s “What’s This Called?” Program. Sadly, Ricardo could not appear on his own show (due to the all-encompassing financial crisis), and so I stepped in, not only to host but to run live sound as well. Derek performed three “pieces”: two short covers, prefaced by a longer (and awesome) improvised bit. While there wasn’t much of an interview, I included a few snippets of us talking that day, too. For more information about him, you can check him out at: http://www.myspace.com/derekmjohnson.

PLUS!
“A Tribute To Ron Asheton Minicast”
As a huge Stooges fan, I couldn’t pass up the chance to do a small tribute to Ron, in honor of his unfortunate death. I was able to see them once in the Spring of 2007 at SxSW, and they were as good as advertised on stage, if not better. So I close the show with a “minicast” talking about my interest as a fan, will “Real Cool Time” & “1970” play on. I’ll be including occasional “minicasts” as they are appropriate or fit the show, and I will always try to draw attention to them for interested listeners.
Well, the first episode finished a couple hours ago, and I think it was quite a success. After a brief re-introduction to the medium of radio (and, to one degree, my previous radio incarnations), we jump into an episode that could just as easily have been called, “Radio About Radio.” All the hits (and a few misses) crop up throughout this audio-essay, complete with a Radio Recommendation, and Mr. Joel Gaddis co-staring as “Jerry.”
Some Interesting Factioids of Note: There are three clips from my previous radio broadcasts near the beginning of my show. The first was recorded on January 6th, 1999, exactly 10 years ago, with my then-co-host Holden Craft. That show was broacast at KWVA. The other two clips are from my tenure at KPSU: 06/29/04 (my first comeback show, with Dabney Coleman Knife Fight behind my talking), and 09/18/07 (my second-last show ever).
The “There Is Nothing Wrong With Your Radio” Clip comes from a mix-tape my friend (and ex-bandmate) Syd Louse made me in or around 1995. He recorded it off of a radio station he listened to obsessively as a kid in the ’80’s, the same time I grew up with radio (but in another rural town an hour away). I felt it was nice to play that a bring it full circle.
“WWED”: What Would Earl Do. As a member of the Church Of Blasphuphmus, you can always learn from Earl’s teachings.
“Talk Dirty To Me” is also sort of an inside joke between me and Syd, though in the years since it has taken on an additional significance for me, probably because of that.
“Night Court,” meanwhile, is a bit of an inside joke between myself & Holden Craft (dating back to Jr. High, practically). He and I played it on my show on January 6th, 1999. Again, I was going for the “full circle” effect.
While it’s a rather obvious pick, “This Is Radio Clash” was also important to me because I also played it on my first-ever broadcast when I started at KWVA.
“New Hit Radio”: My roommate of 15 years introduced me to Unwound. I never formally got to thank him for that, so I just play them a lot on my show and think of him.
The Parts & Labor song was picked only because I discovered that band via the Sound Opinions show.
Everything Else Not Already Cited / Credited: Mine Mine Mine!
Next week, stay tuned for It’s Alive: Part I, where I feature some of the recent live recordings I’ve made at KPSU.
As always, your input helps make the show, so please, feel free to send your comments and criticisms to: austinrich [at] gmail [ditty-dot] com. It’s the only way we learn.
This is a 60 Minute audio essay about the Holiday Season, with music, sound effects, voice-overs, and a few commercials. For those of you who have never heard the kind of shows I do, this is an excellent introduction to my radio style, and a wonderful hour of holiday sounds for those New Year’s parties around the corner. (Token mentions of X-Mas were, sadly, unavoidable.) Consider this my holiday gift to the city of Portland, and anyone else I forgot to get a gift for. Sorry.
Out With The New, In With The Old. (Special Is This Music? coverage for Hogwash while he’s out of town. Originally broadcast on 28 December 2008 on KPSU.)

“Out With The New, In With The Old.” This week, Austin Rich covers for Hogwash to bring you “Be That Song?” Today’s show featured an audio essay regarding the Holiday Season, and makes a great introduction to the kind of show I’ll start doing on January Sixth, 2009, when Blasphuphmus Radio premieres on KPSU. Tune in at 3 PM, won’t you?
For those of you who missed Derek Johnson’s great live performance on KPSU the other day, fear not! The wonder of modern technology has enabled us to capture sound recordings in a digital form, for your consumption. This brand new technology will no doubt revolutionize your life soon enough, but today it has allowed for this marvel to bring the past into the present at any future time of your choosing.
Thanks again to KPSU for letting me host, this, Ricardo Wang for being hard up and needing to make real money that day, and of course, Derek Johnson for rushing into the studio at the last second and still pulling off a great performance.
For those of you who missed yesterday’s episode of What’s This Called?, fear not! The power of the Inter-Web enables you to retrieve a recording of this broadcast at your leisure, and thus listen to it with the .mp3 playing device of your choice.
Nov 8th, 2008 Broadcast from noon – 1 PM. (Note: we went over by a few minutes, and so our last voice over may be recorded in the following hour.)
In preparation for the show, Ricardo created this really cool photo remix (featured right). This was included in all the promotion he did for this episode, and you can find more information about this photo (and viewer comments) here. If I were you, I’d check out the rest of his photos, too. Very, very cool.

Me, Solo? Taking over the old Gumbo Ya-Ya show from Paul Ronan, I bring my particular brand of madness to the Wednesday night line-up.
Having been on Tuesdays up until this point, it was interesting to move to another night. However, I was among some incredible company, being on after Guitar Shop (still on the air), and before moss garden variety hour, hosted by Ranger Mike. While I did not stay in this spot for long, it was nice to temporarily hold this extremely excellent time slot, and the people who listened were always treated to some fantastic tunes. Wednesday, 6 PM – 7 PM.

Ricardo hosted the group Mortal Engines on What’s This Called?, and I got tapped to run live sound. Well, little did I know that three of these recordings would wind up on one of their albums: Sugar Skull. It was really cool to get credited again for some live sound work I’ve done, and the album is well worth checking out. Hopefully there won’t be nearly as much of a gap between this and the next radio appearance I make. This was just too much fun to put off this long again.

Whew! This is quite possibly the longest playlist I’ve EVERY posted. My good friend Mr. Jonathan Savoie (Defstar) prepared two great mixes, and wanted a chance to debut them for all the world to hear. His Defstar project is… unusual, no doubt about it, but almost instantly he got my ass shaking. Exactly how, I’m not sure. I mean, from Yes to Don Lonie, to Zappa, Man Is The Bastard, & The Beatles on 45? If I had to sum it up in a word, I’d say: incredible. Check it out, if you dare!

Recreated using playlist information and the full hour that exists from this show, the original form of this broadcast was a two-hour special, featuring pre-recorded segments from the DJ after me, who would “appear” to discuss his VD plans with his girlfriend. Those segments, minus a handful of voice overs, are missing from this presentation.
However, what you do get is a fantastic DJ set by my friend Isosceles Diego, and the complete first hour, in all of it’s majesty and wonder. Thanks again buddy! You totally delivered a show when I was not ready to do one.
Enjoy!

We say goodbye to Alice Coltrane. We play a remix of Zoe Keating’s “Legions” from our unintentionally minimalistic lve broadcast some months ago (the remix fixes that!) Lots of other expunkamental drone, noise, and beauty for your devourement of course. Two hours worth (surprise!) yet again.
The last, for now, of these epic two hour shows. Next week a great new show (sort of new, to this time slot anyway) “Space is the Place” follows at 1 PM. Any show named after a Sun Ra song is ace in my book!

While Blasphuphmus Radio has never been the kind of show to flip format when the holidays arise, every year or so I get the urge to deliver back to the listeners my idea of holiday offerings. Christmas is a time of year when we are overwhelmed with holiday offerings, and rather than go down that same old road, I usually try to cook up something that is a little more than your average Jingle Bell Rock.
This particular show comes from our “Phase I” archive, consisting of shows that were aired during the early years of KPSU broadcasting. While I never went much for themes in those days, this show hints at things to come, and set the tone for all future holiday broadcasts. While this wasn’t exactly new to me, it gave me a chance to lay the foundation of things to come.
This episode is part two of two.

The music that Static Films plays could loosely be considered to reside in a kind of ‘indie’ scene, but that is not an adequate description of their genre, as they share more with John Coltrane than Conor Oberst. This is where the surprise arrives though – one expects a pop concert, a series of clichés, and instead is given a much more shocking sound-image. If music has been overtaken with a sense of non-communication, idle chatter, or redundant posturing, then the music of Static Films can provide a very good (and very modern) form of communication. By it’s very simplicity it frees perception to shock, and creates a kind of naked lunch of sound. But don’t take our word for it, tune in to Live Friday to hear for yourself.
What? I’m doin’ this show alone? Just playing music that I like? How can be? Enjoy while I try to figure out how, exactly, I contribute to the world around me.

Guest hosted by Sascha. Formed several years ago by Nissa Diamant, Portland’s Ginggang is a mix of metal, glam, and hard rock fused with Eastern European, Old English and American traditional styles. After much searching Nissa found Annamari Navratil to play violin, and Jason “The Barber” Repas to play drums, rounding out the line-up and giving Ginggang their current form. Like a folk band that has mutated through prolonged exposure to electricity, Ginggang features violin, guitar and concertina with a heavy rhythm section. Think Tom Waits meets Black Sabbath at a Gypsy camp, led by intense, soulful lyrics. The band lurches and grinds through metal riffs and sultry old world melodies, with dueling guitar and violin highwire solos, and slinking concertina vamps with thick, heavy basslines backing it up. But the only real way to experience Ginggang today is to listen here, now, on Live Friday.
During the broadcast of this episode, I was training a new KPSU volunteer, who makes appearances during the voice-overs.

Consisting of ex-members of Glance Failed, Clarity Process, Shamelady and Union of the Snake, Prize Country borrows nothing from it’s past. Moving onward, these four gentlemen have decided to take music back to its basic and most inspirational form – ROCK AND ROLL. Big guitars and drums mixed with thick storming bass licks blaze through understandable compositions. Forget the math-rock, forget the jazz-improv-metal-fusion mixture, forget the emo-screamo, bleed-your-heart, cry-on-your-shoulder sentimentality. Rock is back. Prize Country blends influences from mid 90’s era stalwarts a la Failure and/or Barkmarket, with a serrated punk undercurrent of earlier era Dischord, like Fugazi. But make no mistake – this is point blank rock and roll, and you can here it here on Live Friday.

The Gilligan Fetixsh Band is a modern rock / punk / psychobilly band that started in 1989 as a one man band, and has now grown to include Melissa Baker on drums & Adam Miller (The Snippet Birds, St Hubbins) on bass. Gilligan Fetixsh himself is on guitar, with his uniquely and deliciously grungy sound and sloppy “Flock Of Seagulls” guitar solos, with vocals and lyrics about the usual Portland elements: aliens, past lives and old ghosts. To find out more, why not tune in to Live Friday?

While I’m off in Europe as part of the DJ exchange program, my Hungarian cousin (also named Austin Rich) is filling in here at KPSU, spinning Halloween tunes for the four weeks leading up to the most sacred and hallowed holiday. For this first installment, he picked out a wide assortment of terrible tunes that have a decidedly classic sound, ranging from back-in-the-day hits (“The Headless Horseman”) to modern-day classics that sound like good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll (“Graveyard” by Dead Moon). This is the first in a four part series, so stay tuned for next weeks installment, “Halloween Cheese!”

The New Bloods are an all-girl art-punk trio, enamored with and influenced by a wide array of musical sounds and styles. Using violin, bass, guitar & drums, all three use their distinctive voices to produce a natural sound that makes you feel like you’ve shed your clothes are are enjoyably covering yourself in mud and leaves. Their music makes you want to dance, sing, and explore your dream life time and again. Fortunately you can have this experience by tuning in to hear them on Live Friday.

Roxy joins me for a second time, to spin records of her selection, and spend another hour of our lives dancing ’til we can’t dance no more. We cut through the treakle and, instead, let her pull out all the hits that keep her going while on tour, and condense them down into an easy-to-digest radio show format. Along the way we’re joined by Satan (calling in to discuss “roommate” issues with Roxy), and we cover almost all the bases, from The Nuns to the Exploding Hearts. This one was so much fun, I wish all my shows were like this. Hell yeah.

When you’re walking down the street and you hear a sound that makes you stop and do a double take, you know you’re listening to VaVa Voom. This sexy sextet of PDX rock stars blend rock and pop to create a wonderful sound that’s been turning plenty of heads at clubs and house shows, telling stories of sex, drugs, booze, and the end of civilization as we know it. Their songwriting is top notch, and their stage show makes you want to shake it ’til they let you join the band. Until then, you’ll have to catch them here, tonight, on Live Friday.
Special two-hour show! With Songs The Lord Taught Us out for the week, we took this opportunity to stage yet another performance by none other than The Black Noise Orchestra! For their third live performance, we were conducted by none other than Andy Z, long time KPSU DJ and co-host of the moss garden variety hour. We were joined by The Scrouch (host at Dekum Manor, and a member of the local group VaVa Voom), Ranger Mike (also of the moss garden variety hour) & Jasun Wurster, KPSU’s hard-working soundman. The show starts with a couple tracks from the new Acid Mothers Temple album, then kicks in to a full hour and 20 minutes of solid black noise. This one’s a keeper, so check out both hours… if you dare! 8 P.M. – 10 P.M

Always looking for new live music, I turn to the local scene yet again and find PDX’s The Brass Tacks, a young psychobilly band still in search of a drummer, but ready to really show the down what’s what. We bring them in to play a few songs, chat about how they got together, and then to play some songs that fit their particular aesthetic and musical taste. This show is all about them, while I sit back and let the chaos do it’s thing. They don’t yet have a recording out, so this is your chance to download this show and have your very own. Enjoy!9 P.M. – 10 P.M.

Mustaphamond are one of those bands that defy classification or comparison, and with good reason: their stage show actually lives up to their reputation. So often in the music world, bands fall short of the “amazing” or “phenomenal” hyperbole attributed to them. With Mustaphamond, everything is 100% true. This band rocks as well as emotes, tears through blazing riffs and stops on a dime to introduce a new time signature, all the while giving you a stage show that is worth muscling your way through the crowd to see. But don’t take my word for it, as you never should. Just tune in to Live Friday this week and find out for yourself.
What Should I Do With The Rest Of My Life? It’s a question that’s been weighing on my head lately. As I blast through an hour of songs that I try to use as a soundtrack to that all-important question, I urge callers to give me their advice between plugging some upcoming shows (like, the awesome Mustaphamond show tomorrow). I also feature a song by ex-bandmates Angry Foriegn Roomate, and continue to anticipate the super-bad-ass up-coming Mission Of Burma album. I send everyone off with a little Gnarls Barkley, the best album of this year. 9 P.M. – 10 P.M.

I came into the station to find that our Automix was not running, so I assembled a quick “pre-game show” by throwing on Ryuichi Sakamoto’s excellent guest re-mix album Bricolages. The program itself features some great tracks off a compilation from Connecticut label Severered By Records called War of the Species, and a disc I just found in my box by composers Mikael Karlsson and Rob Stephenson called Dog (so we have an emerging “animal theme” here…) Plus of course the usual explosive miscellany.

The Tales of Solar Sail – Dark Stars in the Dazzling Sky
Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso U.F.O.
Portland sheet rock band Reverse Dotty And The Candy Cane Shivs started out with one simple mission: to make new dance music instead of listening to dance music that was already made. The band consists of five people but is occasionally referred to as a sextet, which they claim is because the kind of music they have been making so far is that kind of innuendo are ladled juicily over the quivering tremolo sound of stimulating heavy metal guitars, in rounds, through a Marshall half-stack. Their hope is that this approach will encourage or otherwise facilitate sexual intercourse between two or more parties who are listening to the music. Pretty lofty goals, but for those daring enough to pair off in their bedrooms, why not make Live Friday your sexy soundtrack?
I start off on my own, trying to get a groove on, and end with a minion by the name of Katie to help me kick things into high-gear. I’m still in love with The Prids, as you could probably tell, and in anticipation of the Mission Of Burma show, I play some of the new album, plus Radio Birdman, Wire, and a track from the FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC new Nomeansno album. This one should probably be filed under “Punk, etc.” At this time our show was on from 9 P.M. – 10 P.M.

Tage returns! Round III! I have to say, I am more or less in love with this man’s taste in music. Everything this man plays fills my heart with joy and makes me sit up and take notice. After a week off, Tage pulls out all the old records and thrills me with an hour of cool, cool rock music to make anyone’s mind melt. He covers the entire gammut, and leaves room to spare. Not only that, but he covers the hour after me solo, so if you like what you heard, check out the ten o’clock hour. I would suggest downloading all three Tage shows. They really are a trilogy.

Punk roustabouts Johnny Punchclock scream hillbilly anthems like banshees in a whiskey fog, detonating any ideas about how much (or little) raw aggression you thought the string band idiom could possibly churn out. Really, that’s all you need to know to want to tune in this week. Won’t you?
My friends Ashtray from down south were in town for a few days, so in addition to letting them stay in my living room and buy me a shitload of Bourbon, I also brought them in to play a set of music on the radio. Hilarity and hi-jinx proceeding, which included them playing a lot of stuff on their own, and giving me the low-down regarding thier tour. These guys are a high-energy punk band who managed to get not one but two shows in PDX before heading up north, both of which are going to be great shows. If you want to get and idea, just listen to this show. 9 P.M. – 10 P.M.

Round Two! Tage is quickly becoming a favorite DJ around KPSU, and this week we asked him back to pick out more rare and wonderful records that fill my heart with so much joy. We start the show off with a tribute to the late great Arthur Lee, and then move straight into the obscuro with The Wimps, Disco Zombies, & Slug (Lovemakers). Jasun and Leigh pop their heads in briefly, and we chat about records all through the hour. If “Boys Will Be Boys” doesn’t do something for you, then there is something seriously wrong with your sensibilites.

This week I show new KPSU DJ Tage the ropes as he busts out his record collection and digs deep into the vaults of rock. A lot of this stuff is new to me, or so legendary I have yet to be able to purchase it. We go old and new, Stoner & Punk, International & Local, and bring you an awesome selection of stuff for the discerning fan. Tage and I got along so well, he’s joining me again for next weeks show. kiisu d’salyss was once a member of the band Cathead with yours truly, is the brain child behind the oddball entity Neutered Prunes, and additionally plays guitar in the well loved local group Empty Room.
He is also, in addition to being a local musician, THE POPE of The Church of Blasphuphmus, the faith we’re both intensely immersed in.
This evening, kiisu and I go through all sorts of shenanigans, including playing some tunes we enjoy, listening to a rare performance by Neutered Prunes, and then performing two improvised songs of our own under the guise of The Black Noise Orchestra. This is the first time we’ve performed publicly in almost 10 years, so this is one for the history books.
Enjoy!
(At this period, the show was on from 9 P.M. – 10 P.M.)

Backed by Vinh Nguyen on percussion (using several pieces of garbage, metal pipes, buckets, bamboo sticks, a giant wooden box), Megan Lockwood on Violin, and Rachael Wilson on a toy Xylophone and “Noise Machine,” If If, Was Was… (Chris Hoganson) writes a mixture of loud “Rock” songs, Crooning love ballads, and songs about dying. This, the newest incarnation of the band, will be going into the studio for the next few weeks to re-record the previously solo, “Another Word for Thesaurus,” which is currently out in another form and rockin’ the kids all over No. Po. The songs are strong enough to stand on their own with just Guitar and Vocals, but the wall of junky yet beautiful sound behind them makes them stand something much more impressive. They are a combination of heartfelt sentiment and bizarrely executed technical ability, and they are something that is worth listening to. While you can still locate the CD around town, the best way to hear them is to tune into Live Friday, this week, and check ’em out.
As a member (and father) of The Mayonnaise vs. Venn, Steven has played down at KPSU a number of times, and as a career musician, he’s had his share of performances around the US. After a series of near-misses over the last month, we finally get together for a performance of original and covers, primarily performed on the piano. This is an intimate and beautiful performance by an excellent (and funny) musician, and we round the hour our with two great acoustic performances as well. This is one for a quiet and introspective evening, or if you want to laugh at us trying to be funny between the songs. 9 P.M. – 10 P.M.
Starry Starry Starry are a three person multi-instrumental pop group that play delicate music with guitars, piano, violin, mandolin, glockenspiel, percussion, voice and more. Although they consider themselves genre-less their sound ranges from country to Japanese punk rock. Probably the best way to get to know them is to attend a house party with their band carefully rockin’ out in the basement. The second best way is to tune in to Live Friday and give them a listen.
Feeling frisky, confused, excited, dancy, and just a little bit like man’s futility in a meaningless Universe is a little too much to bear? Then this is the show for you! In a bit of a strange mood, I brought in some of the weirder things that put me in the mood. We start off with a little Mad Monster Party, and take it all the way to the other extreme, ending with the hottest (and most horny-inducing) Stooges song EVER! In the meantime a lot of other choice tunes turn up: Coachwhips, Little Fyodor, Acid Mothers Temple, you name it! But it all comes back to that’s confused grip on the world around you… what better way to make sense of it than here? At this time, our program was on from 9 – 10 PM.

Usually when your sound man tries to book a band for you, it’s normal to be skeptical. But Jasun went all out by recommending The Angel City Outcasts, and punk / rock / metal explosion of beer drinking, show-attending, good-time music. Their two albums out now are fantastic, and having toured with some big bands makes these guys some seasoned professionals. We brought ’em down for a live set and an interview, proving that there’s a little Angel City Outcast in us all. 5 P.M. – 6 P.M. (Last Tuesday Afternoon Show… Ever!)
photo by diavoli /Basia The Legendary Pink Dots are playing 7/10 at Berbati’s in PDX, so there’s quite a bit of LPD/Ka-Spel material this week. And other tasty surprises of course.
The Prids‘ new album, “Until the World Is Beautiful” is a follow-up to the band’s 2003 debut, which successfully nails down the heart-bursting experience of a live Prids show. The album builds on the themes David and Mistina have found the most intriguing in music: drunk on sadness, letting go, keeping hope alive, and letting things fall apart. Their sound has been compared to obscure and mainstream groups alike, but their new album hits you so squarely in the chest that it begs you to put them in a category all their own. For best results, why not tune in tonight to hear a live set here on KPSU. Hosted by Ranger Mike.
Two Hours Of Madness! Since Cybil War was gone this week, I dig deep into my collection and pull out two hours of great stuff for ya’ll to enjoy. For hour #1 I play a lot of the usual weird stuff that’s been getting me off lately. For hour two, I flew in some of my lackeys (one of which was celebrating a birthday) and let them do all the work for me. From start to finish it’s a strange mix o’ stuff, but the rock never stopped, and by the end we’d run the entire gamut of tunes. This is great for one of those parties that starts out really weird but ends with folks wanting to do the pop-punk shuffle.

For those of you who tuned in to listen to the Vulturines, the band did not show up for one reason or another. However, I stepped up to the challenge by playing some of my favorite performances on KPSU over the last year plus, and really dug deep into the archives to bring you music that you won’t hear anywhere else. Highlights include Dr. Frank Portman (of The Mr. T Experience), The BellRays, Courage, Jesse Ransom, Cassia Gammil, and The Headliners… in addition to other great music, too. This is a great episode to start with for those who want to know the kind of things you’ll hear on KPSU.

First 9 PM Wednesday Show! New Time! In honor of this momentous occasion, I decided to pull out a lot of improvisational music, probably partially motivated by the Noise Jam we had on Sunday (still available for download here and here). Again, this show was too good to do sitting down. Since I’m surrounded by such good DJs before and after, it was tough going at first, but once I got the first song blasting, I knew it was gonna be alright. Token Coachwhips and Hospitals songs aside (I just can’t get enough of them), this show has a little bit of everything, which is probably a good place for new listeners to start with. Here’s to the beginning of a wonderful new era in The Church’s History! Praise Earl!

As one of my last Tuesday afternoon shows, I pulled out all the stops and turned everything up to 11. The new Boris kicks major ass, I previewed the up-and-commers New Bloods, and Aids Wolf is hitting the spot ohh-so-much these days. I plugged the hell out of my new time-slot (Wednesday Nights, 9 PM), and new listeners can think of this show as a blueprint for the kind of things they’ll hear if they tune in. Hope you caught this one live, cause our archive couldn’t handle this one. It was just TOO good.

Guest Appearances on The Crusty Nipple Hair Hour / Sunday’s Are Stupid Shows! KPSU is throwing down the gauntlet with a new experiment in radio: a two hour Noise Jam featuring local KPSU DJs. Tim Nicodemus is conducting this “orchestra” of sorts, which will include Aaron Reyna, DJ Russ B, Dan Parscale, Ranger Mike and Zach. Instruments will include 2 (two) drumsets, two acoustic guitars, two basses, one keyboard, one synth processor, a recorder (the woodwind type), a saw, and our voices. It should prove to be a great time. Both Dan & DJ Russ B have been kind enough to offer up their shows for this experiment, and if all goes well this could become a regular KPSU event.
Make sure to tune in. This should be ridiculously fun, if not for you, then for us. Enjoy.
The show was a complete success in my opinion. We got a request to play some Queen, and a German Record label called during the performance to ask if they could sign us. Tim & Aaron had a drum off, and Ranger Mike & I had a period of dueling basses. We did a 1 Second long song, a few 30 Second long jams, and few longer ones. All it all, it was great. Please check it out; we had a lot of fun making it, the least you could do is listen to it.
So many awesome things to play, so damn little time! Lots of excerpts this week to fit in as much as possible. Two great new compilations to sample (Reek of Influence on Icky Recordings, and Wiretapper 15!) and a split CDR from Turkey. Plus a little Gyorgy Ligeti in rememberance to start things off.
