First Contact Part II: Ricardo Wang! (Recorded 27 July 2013)
(Featuring live DJ set by KPSU’s Ricardo Wang, recorded at Slim’s in historic St. John’s!)
Our show at Slim’s on 27 July 2013 (our so-called Experimental Podcast Party) was a tremendous amount of fun, and I’ve been really jonesing to get these recordings out to you guys. And, today, you are in luck, because we can now present the entire show in three parts. Part I is available, and includes incredible performances by Ryan Ray & The Accumulation and the Battlesnakes Collective member Admiran. For Part II we’ve decided to bring you the entire half-time DJ set by our incredible friend, Ricardo Wang.
Having an incredible history as a DJ going back to the ’80’s, Ricardo Wang is currently hosting his weekly program What’s This Called? on KPSU.org, where he brings listeners experimental, post-punk, drone, noise and other amazing musical experiences, including an incredible amount of live music. Ricardo has been a huge supporter and friend of Blasphuphmus Radio for years, and his particular sensibility has definitely influenced my own.
For this DJ set, Ricardo is bridging the gap between the kinds of music you would hear on his show, and the kind of music that will get your booty shaking. Ricardo’s taste – much like my own – runs a wide spectrum, and we’ve both discussed how you can remain firmly in the experimental genre, but can deliver some killer dance tunes. This set accentuates this kind of music, and Ricardo really did get people out on the dance floor at Slim’s. I’m really excited to present his set from this night, and I hope you guys dig what he’s delivering.
We would be remiss if we did not mention the audience, who not only showed up in full force for this show, but were very engaging and kept urging us all on. And: they were full of a number of friends, eager to see what we’d concocted for this evening’s entertainment. For that: thank you. While we don’t need to remind you, without out, there would be no show.
Part III of this show includes live performances by Four Dimensional Nightmare and The Black Noise Orchestra! Stay tuned!
