Three Sided Record: “Jonathon Boober” b/w “Austin Rich” b/w “Miss Rikki”
(Featuring a two-hour block of solid DJing, by three complimentary curators of taste.)
The love don’t stop on this eight-hour extravaganza of incredible music happiness, and covering for the Whitechapel Circus this week, we presented three unique blocks of radio that completely capture our own unique personalities as DJs. For radio nerds, this is an interesting opportunity to see these two hours develop as we transition from one to the other. All three of have parallel – yet singular – visions of radio and music (and how they combine), and while it is easy enough to tell where one ends and the other begins, as a whole there is a cohesion that is compelling, and really fuckin’ rocks, too.
Kicking things off, Jonathon Boober launches into some of his favorite tunes that have been treating him right in recent months. His old program, Hogwash Hodgepodge & Musical Detritus, was an incredible show that was well worth your time, and I regularly lament that it is no longer a part of the KPSU line-up. However, you should check out his TV Show, Please Remain Seated, featuring cutting edge talk, music, art, & performance. His selections in music are incredible, and any time he is on the decks, you should listen.
Toward the middle of the first hour, he and I start trading off selections in the tradition of great DJ Battles of the past. This leads into a miniature solo-set, kicking off the top of hour two. This set gets a little strange, admittedly, but is a good companion piece to the 12 Noon hour from earlier in the day. I’m quite pleased with the results, and hopefully you’ll enjoy it too. It’s an experimental Firesign / Folkways mash-up? Maybe?
Then, toward the second half of the second hour, Miss Rikki jumps in to finish things off, while I start setting up the next two bands who will appear on Closet Radio. While hosting two programs herself – both of which follow their own complex and thorny paths through goth and punk rock – her interests are quite varied and impressive, and I usually find a few gems I have never heard, coupled with a few moldy oldies that I haven’t heard in ages.
What makes this show interesting (to me) is that we are really just making it up as we go. None of us had discussed what we were gonna do, and it really develops by the seat of our pants. This is a kind of radio that is rarely done: whatever your inspiration is at the moment, run with it. While it’s not for everyone, it is definitely my cup of tea.
Setlist to come. In the meantime: enjoy!
