In The Mood To Make You Groove (Phase I Episode 154)
Me, Solo? Taking over the old Gumbo Ya-Ya show from Paul Ronan, I bring my particular brand of madness to the Wednesday night line-up.
Having been on Tuesdays up until this point, it was interesting to move to another night. However, I was among some incredible company, being on after Guitar Shop (still on the air), and before moss garden variety hour, hosted by Ranger Mike. While I did not stay in this spot for long, it was nice to temporarily hold this extremely excellent time slot, and the people who listened were always treated to some fantastic tunes. Wednesday, 6 PM – 7 PM.

The Defstar Remix Show (KPSU Phase I Episode 145)
Whew! This is quite possibly the longest playlist I’ve EVERY posted. My good friend Mr. Jonathan Savoie (Defstar) prepared two great mixes, and wanted a chance to debut them for all the world to hear. His Defstar project is… unusual, no doubt about it, but almost instantly he got my ass shaking. Exactly how, I’m not sure. I mean, from Yes to Don Lonie, to Zappa, Man Is The Bastard, & The Beatles on 45? If I had to sum it up in a word, I’d say: incredible. Check it out, if you dare!

Isosceles Diego’s Valentine’s Day Special (KPSU Phase I Episode 140)
Recreated using playlist information and the full hour that exists from this show, the original form of this broadcast was a two-hour special, featuring pre-recorded segments from the DJ after me, who would “appear” to discuss his VD plans with his girlfriend. Those segments, minus a handful of voice overs, are missing from this presentation.
However, what you do get is a fantastic DJ set by my friend Isosceles Diego, and the complete first hour, in all of it’s majesty and wonder. Thanks again buddy! You totally delivered a show when I was not ready to do one.
Enjoy!

Christmas Music For People Who Don’t Like Christmas Music Part II (Phase I Episode 133)
While Blasphuphmus Radio has never been the kind of show to flip format when the holidays arise, every year or so I get the urge to deliver back to the listeners my idea of holiday offerings. Christmas is a time of year when we are overwhelmed with holiday offerings, and rather than go down that same old road, I usually try to cook up something that is a little more than your average Jingle Bell Rock.
This particular show comes from our “Phase I” archive, consisting of shows that were aired during the early years of KPSU broadcasting. While I never went much for themes in those days, this show hints at things to come, and set the tone for all future holiday broadcasts. While this wasn’t exactly new to me, it gave me a chance to lay the foundation of things to come.
This episode is part two of two.

Halloween Spook-tacular Part I: Classics From The Crypt (Phase I Episode 122)
At this time, our program was on from 9 P.M. – 10 P.M.
While I’m off in Europe as part of the DJ exchange program, my Hungarian cousin (also named Austin Rich) is filling in here at KPSU, spinning Halloween tunes for the four weeks leading up to the most sacred and hallowed holiday. For this first installment, he picked out a wide assortment of terrible tunes that have a decidedly classic sound, ranging from back-in-the-day hits (“The Headless Horseman”) to modern-day classics that sound like good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll (“Graveyard” by Dead Moon). This is the first in a four part series, so stay tuned for next weeks installment, “Halloween Cheese!”

Roxy Epoxie (KPSU Phase I Episode 121)
Roxy joins me for a second time, to spin records of her selection, and spend another hour of our lives dancing ’til we can’t dance no more. We cut through the treakle and, instead, let her pull out all the hits that keep her going while on tour, and condense them down into an easy-to-digest radio show format. Along the way we’re joined by Satan (calling in to discuss “roommate” issues with Roxy), and we cover almost all the bases, from The Nuns to the Exploding Hearts. This one was so much fun, I wish all my shows were like this. Hell yeah.

The Black Noise Orchestra, LIVE! (Phase I Episode 120)
Special two-hour show! With Songs The Lord Taught Us out for the week, we took this opportunity to stage yet another performance by none other than The Black Noise Orchestra! For their third live performance, we were conducted by none other than Andy Z, long time KPSU DJ and co-host of the moss garden variety hour. We were joined by The Scrouch (host at Dekum Manor, and a member of the local group VaVa Voom), Ranger Mike (also of the moss garden variety hour) & Jasun Wurster, KPSU’s hard-working soundman. The show starts with a couple tracks from the new Acid Mothers Temple album, then kicks in to a full hour and 20 minutes of solid black noise. This one’s a keeper, so check out both hours… if you dare! 8 P.M. – 10 P.M

The Brass Tacks, LIVE! (Phase I Episode 119)
Always looking for new live music, I turn to the local scene yet again and find PDX’s The Brass Tacks, a young psychobilly band still in search of a drummer, but ready to really show the down what’s what. We bring them in to play a few songs, chat about how they got together, and then to play some songs that fit their particular aesthetic and musical taste. This show is all about them, while I sit back and let the chaos do it’s thing. They don’t yet have a recording out, so this is your chance to download this show and have your very own. Enjoy! 9 P.M. – 10 P.M.

Trying To Figure Out What To Do With The Rest Of My Life (Phase I Episode Episode 118)
What Should I Do With The Rest Of My Life? It’s a question that’s been weighing on my head lately. As I blast through an hour of songs that I try to use as a soundtrack to that all-important question, I urge callers to give me their advice between plugging some upcoming shows (like, the awesome Mustaphamond show tomorrow). I also feature a song by ex-bandmates Angry Foriegn Roomate, and continue to anticipate the super-bad-ass up-coming Mission Of Burma album. I send everyone off with a little Gnarls Barkley, the best album of this year. 9 P.M. – 10 P.M.

Punk, Etc. w/ Katie (KPSU Phase I Episode 117)
I start off on my own, trying to get a groove on, and end with a minion by the name of Katie to help me kick things into high-gear. I’m still in love with The Prids, as you could probably tell, and in anticipation of the Mission Of Burma show, I play some of the new album, plus Radio Birdman, Wire, and a track from the FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC new Nomeansno album. Tage Part III (KPSU Phase I Episode 116)
Tage returns! Round III! I have to say, I am more or less in love with this man’s taste in music. Everything this man plays fills my heart with joy and makes me sit up and take notice. After a week off, Tage pulls out all the old records and thrills me with an hour of cool, cool rock music to make anyone’s mind melt. He covers the entire gammut, and leaves room to spare. Not only that, but he covers the hour after me solo, so if you like what you heard, check out the ten o’clock hour. I would suggest downloading all three Tage shows. They really are a trilogy.

Ashtray, LIVE! (Phase I Episode 115)
My friends Ashtray from down south were in town for a few days, so in addition to letting them stay in my living room and buy me a shitload of Bourbon, I also brought them in to play a set of music on the radio. Hilarity and hi-jinx proceeding, which included them playing a lot of stuff on their own, and giving me the low-down regarding thier tour. These guys are a high-energy punk band who managed to get not one but two shows in PDX before heading up north, both of which are going to be great shows. Tage Part II (KPSU Phase I Episode 114)
Round Two! Tage is quickly becoming a favorite DJ around KPSU, and this week we asked him back to pick out more rare and wonderful records that fill my heart with so much joy. We start the show off with a tribute to the late great Arthur Lee, and then move straight into the obscuro with The Wimps, Disco Zombies, & Slug (Lovemakers). Jasun and Leigh pop their heads in briefly, and we chat about records all through the hour. Neutered Prunes & The Black Noise Orchestra (KPSU Phase I Episode 112)
kiisu d’salyss was once a member of the band Cathead with yours truly, is the brain child behind the oddball entity Neutered Prunes, and additionally plays guitar in the well loved local group Empty Room.
He is also, in addition to being a local musician, THE POPE of The Church of Blasphuphmus, the faith we’re both intensely immersed in.
This evening, kiisu and I go through all sorts of shenanigans, including playing some tunes we enjoy, listening to a rare performance by Neutered Prunes, and then performing two improvised songs of our own under the guise of The Black Noise Orchestra. This is the first time we’ve performed publicly in almost 10 years, so this is one for the history books.
Enjoy!

Steven Savoie, LIVE! (Phase I Episode 111)
As a member (and father) of The Mayonnaise vs. Venn, Steven has played down at KPSU a number of times, and as a career musician, he’s had his share of performances around the US. After a series of near-misses over the last month, we finally get together for a performance of original and covers, primarily performed on the piano. This is an intimate and beautiful performance by an excellent (and funny) musician, and we round the hour our with two great acoustic performances as well. This is one for a quiet and introspective evening, or if you want to laugh at us trying to be funny between the songs. 9 P.M. – 10 P.M.

The Baron (KPSU Phase I Episode 110)
Feeling frisky, confused, excited, dancy, and just a little bit like man’s futility in a meaningless Universe is a little too much to bear? Then this is the show for you! In a bit of a strange mood, I brought in some of the weirder things that put me in the mood. We start off with a little Mad Monster Party, and take it all the way to the other extreme, ending with the hottest (and most horny-inducing) Stooges song EVER! In the meantime a lot of other choice tunes turn up: Coachwhips, Little Fyodor, Acid Mothers Temple, you name it! But it all comes back to that’s confused grip on the world around you… what better way to make sense of it than here? At this time, our program was on from 9 – 10 PM.

Angel City Outcasts, LIVE! (Phase I Episode 109)
Usually when your sound man tries to book a band for you, it’s normal to be skeptical. But Jasun went all out by recommending The Angel City Outcasts, and punk / rock / metal explosion of beer drinking, show-attending, good-time music. Their two albums out now are fantastic, and having toured with some big bands makes these guys some seasoned professionals. We brought ’em down for a live set and an interview, proving that there’s a little Angel City Outcast in us all. 5 P.M. – 6 P.M. (Last Tuesday Afternoon Show… Ever!)

A Lot Of The Usual Weird Stuff (Phase I Episode 108)
Two Hours Of Madness! Since Cybil War was gone this week, I dig deep into my collection and pull out two hours of great stuff for ya’ll to enjoy. For hour #1 I play a lot of the usual weird stuff that’s been getting me off lately. For hour two, I flew in some of my lackeys (one of which was celebrating a birthday) and let them do all the work for me. From start to finish it’s a strange mix o’ stuff, but the rock never stopped, and by the end we’d run the entire gamut of tunes. This is great for one of those parties that starts out really weird but ends with folks wanting to do the pop-punk shuffle.

The Beginning Of A New Era (Phase I Episode 107)
First 9 PM Wednesday Show! New Time! In honor of this momentous occasion, I decided to pull out a lot of improvisational music, probably partially motivated by the Noise Jam we had on Sunday (still available for download here and here). Again, this show was too good to do sitting down. Since I’m surrounded by such good DJs before and after, it was tough going at first, but once I got the first song blasting, I knew it was gonna be alright. Token Coachwhips and Hospitals songs aside (I just can’t get enough of them), this show has a little bit of everything, which is probably a good place for new listeners to start with. Here’s to the beginning of a wonderful new era in The Church’s History! Praise Earl!

20 Jazz Funk Greats (KPSU Phase I Episode 106)
As one of my last Tuesday afternoon shows, I pulled out all the stops and turned everything up to 11. The new Boris kicks major ass, I previewed the up-and-commers New Bloods, and Aids Wolf is hitting the spot ohh-so-much these days. I plugged the hell out of my new time-slot (Wednesday Nights, 9 PM), and new listeners can think of this show as a blueprint for the kind of things they’ll hear if they tune in. Hope you caught this one live, cause our archive couldn’t handle this one. It was just TOO good.

Sundays Are Stupid w/ The Black Noise Orchestra, LIVE!
Guest Appearances on The Crusty Nipple Hair Hour / Sunday’s Are Stupid Shows! KPSU is throwing down the gauntlet with a new experiment in radio: a two hour Noise Jam featuring local KPSU DJs. Tim Nicodemus is conducting this “orchestra” of sorts, which will include Aaron Reyna, DJ Russ B, Dan Parscale, Ranger Mike and Zach. Instruments will include 2 (two) drumsets, two acoustic guitars, two basses, one keyboard, one synth processor, a recorder (the woodwind type), a saw, and our voices. It should prove to be a great time. Both Dan & DJ Russ B have been kind enough to offer up their shows for this experiment, and if all goes well this could become a regular KPSU event.
Make sure to tune in. This should be ridiculously fun, if not for you, then for us. Enjoy.
The show was a complete success in my opinion. We got a request to play some Queen, and a German Record label called during the performance to ask if they could sign us. Tim & Aaron had a drum off, and Ranger Mike & I had a period of dueling basses. We did a 1 Second long song, a few 30 Second long jams, and few longer ones. All it all, it was great. Please check it out; we had a lot of fun making it, the least you could do is listen to it.

Another Math-ternoon of Rock (Phase I Episode Episode 105)
I just can’t seem to get enough of the rock lately, and so this week I knocked over all the chairs and had a solo dance-party in the booth amped up on nothing more than the summer sun and a few cups of coffee. Interjected long enough to do Hella ticket giveaways, I cracked up the stereo and blasted out everything that sounds good LOUD. Obligatory Coachwhips, Hospitals and Men’s Recovery Project aside, this is another math-ternoon of rock, complete with ass-shaking, belly achin’, and groin-waggin’ of the most extreme degree. This is the one you’ll want blastin’ at that house party this weekend, or from the boom box tied to your bike as you cruise through the park. Can I get a hell yeah?

Block of Rock (Phase I Episode 104)
It’s Finals Week here on the PSU campus, and while I’ve been cramming for my WWII final Thursday morning, I decided I needed a good soundtrack to help make sense of everything. With that in mind I immediately reached for everything I could find that ROCKED THE FUCK OUT, pausing only briefly to insert a few weird dance tunes, and then wrap things up with a Math-tacular Block of Rock. If you need a soundtrack that’ll help you keep all the names, dates, equations, formulas, and anything else you’re being tested on afloat in your pretty little head, then this is the show for you. This show also includes brilliant excerpts from the most peculiar album ever released, “Astro Sounds From Beyond The Year 2000,” guaranteed to make you go… “Hmmmmmm?”

Jesse Ransom, LIVE! (KPSU Phase I Episode 103)
Jesse Ransom is one of those rare people that you feel lucky to meet in your lifetime: a talented, funny, and genuine person who happens to write beautiful songs that are sometimes as poignant as their are hilarious. His band Mondale (named after the Jello Biafra’s “Names For Bands” spoken word piece) was one of my faves: a great mix of Punk, Surf and songs about girls. In the years since Jesse has kept his guitar muscles firmly flexed, which has culminated in me finally calling him and telling him to show up to play music on the air, on this most hallowed of holidays, 666. In the ensuing hour, Ransom busts out three originals, three covers, a lot of anecdotal humor about music in general, and a small taste of some of his big influences. This is a show I’ve been waiting to do for some time now, and it makes me happy to see it finally come to fruition. Please listen, won’t you?

A Math-ternoon of Rock (Phase I Episode Episode 102)
Given that my show has largely become an outlet for live performances in recent months, I found myself showing up at the station today with no band to speak of! With Pledge Drive under our belt, this gave me the opportunity to pull out and play a lot of the new stuff I’ve been groovin’ to lately that I’ve had to put on hold in recent weeks for one reason or another. With a can of Sprite in one hand and a large bowl of Pad Thai in the other, I tear through a math-ternoon or Rock and showcase the strangeness that’s been making my ass move lately, with quick stop into some of the psyche and punk that always hits the spot. With the weather looking as good as it does today, it’s recommended to pop this show into your listening device of choice and hit the streets as the joys and beauty of the impending summer tantalize you visually, too.
(Update: Apparently, this show was so powerful, that KPSU shut down and could not broadcast for several hours afterward. Immediately after I finished my show this week, there was a power surge [or, as I like to think of it, a “Rock” surge] that shut down the entire station. When we came back up again moments later, we were unable to establish a connection with our tower, and couldn’t broadcast for some time afterward. Yet again, it just goes to show the power of the Church. Praise Earl!)

moss garden variety hour (Pledge Drive Karaoke)
Another Guest Appearance on the moss garden variety hour! It’s week two of Pledge Drive, and Ranger Mike & Andy Z wanted to continue their Karaoke madness by doing it again. Again, Michelle from Chopsticks was kind enough to donate her official work discs for the occasion, and we had a pretty great turnout with an even better sound set-up. This show was only 1 hour long, but Miss Meghan asked me to open her show by singing (along with Lux) their cover of “Psychotic Reaction,” which is one of my all time fave songs. All in all, it was quite, quite fun. Here are the links:
We’ll probably be having more Karaoke features on KPSU in the future, so stay tuned! In the meantime, enjoy the stuff you hear in the archive, and thanks again for donating your ears, time and money to KPSU.

Dr. Frank Portman, LIVE! (KPSU Phase I Episode 101)
Frank Portman is known for many things, but most recently his transformation into author with the publication of his first book – King Dork – has elevated him beyond the normal punk rock trappings of his band The Mr. T Experience, and placed him in a whole new category of Rock Star. Fans and critics alike have come to praise the book, which paints an honest and sometimes painful view of the life of a teen, while simultaneously helping people interested in both the written word and music discover new aspects of the same person.
Join KPSU this Wednesday, May 24th at 5 PM (covering for The Guitar Shop this week) as we spend some time with Dr. Frank, for an interview an acoustic performance of some of his songs. This is a special Pledge Drive performance, and something that we’re very happy to be putting on for you. Thanks again to everyone who made this happen. See ya then.
Update: Dr. Frank came through in spades, and the performance was great! He read two excerpts from his book, did a lot of bantering about himself and what he does, and even performed three songs. (One of which was written by the main character of his novel!) So freakin’ cool!
This episode aired from 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.

Cassia Gammil, LIVE! (KPSU Phase I Episode 100)
This week for Pledge Drive I set up a wonderful performance by none other than Cassia Gammil. Cassia is a fantastic musician recently relocated from New Orleans in the wake of the Hurricane. She currently performs in two bands (as a drummer in Cherry Wolf and as a bass player in an as-yet-debuted band). For her solo work, Cassia’s organ and vocal work is second to none, and her songs are beautiful and tragic in a way that will thrill you and make you want more. In this show, We feature a full performance of her original music, plus two songs by her previous New Orleans bands (Tragic Girls End Up Like This & Cielo de Cinnamon). This is a strong Pledge Drive performance by a second-to-none artist, and we’re lucky to have her on KPSU.

moss garden variety hour (Pledge Drive Karaoke)
For Pledge Drive, Ranger Mike & Andy Z came up with the fantastic idea of doing Karaoke on the radio. Michelle from Chopsticks was kind enough to donate her official work discs for the occasion, and Mike invited many of us (friends and DJs included) to help sing along. This was a a two hour presentation for Pledge Drive, and I have to say, Mike & Andy really know how to throw a party!
Pledge Drive has been really kicking a lot of ass this week! I’m glad Mike and Andy let me partake in another part of it! Go KPSU Karaoke Team!

The KPSU Pledge Band (Pledge Drive) (KPSU Phase I Episode 099)
At this time, our program was on from 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.
Being the first week of our Pledge Drive, I decided to call in some friends of mine for the Second Annual KPSU Pledge Band Extravaganza! That’s right, a quick pick-up band was formed from various people I know, and they offered to play cover songs live on the air, all of which are requested by live callers. Last year I only managed to get two people to show up, and this year, in doubling the number of people, I also managed to increae the money raised by ten-fold. As usual, hilarity ensued (it’s just hard to have more that four musicians in a room together without them getting a little excited), and we even managed to attrack a bit of a crowd, too, which really added to the atmosphere. This was, by far, the most hectic and unusual episode of my show to date… and in many ways, the most fun, too. Thanks to all the callers and pledgers! We all thank you for making us produce such wonderful and fun shows!

The Undoing of David Wright & The Tijuana Homers (Live Friday 056)
Another cancellation for Live Friday actually came at a somewhat fortuitous time: at 4 PM the Blue Bossa Lounge show featured a Jazz Duo, and Dave Cusick was featuring other Live artists on his own show AND the grab bag out.
So I opted to play two recordings that are near and dear to my heart in an effort to help make things more sane for those around me. The first half of the show is a recording I made of The Undoing Of David Wright, a band from Austin who were touring through PDX and wanted to get on the radio, and I was more than happy to oblige them on my Tuesday show.
The second half is a recording of The Tijuana Homers, a one-off band that comprised of a current and ex-member of Orange County’s The Flying Saucers. D.A., on Piano / Electric Guitar player, happened to be in town, and Revolting Earwig and he wanted a quick and spontaneous radio reunion, which I was happy to oblige (again on my Tuesday show).
While I have featured both these bands on “best of” Live Friday shows before, this was a chance to play their entire performances for you out in radioland. Make sure to download this rare and wonderful (and quite impromptu) Live Friday show.

Kristen (KPSU Phase I Episode 098)
With a guest on board this week, we did a tag team show as I try to teach her the ins and outs of radio. Things get pretty weird at times and we plunge deep into our record collections and come up with things covered in dust and goo. But by the second half of the show we manage to settle down and figure out where we want to go with things, and build to what I think is a fantastically ass-shakin’ finale. Hilarity ensues.

Levator, LIVE! (Phase I Episode 097)
As I am prone to do from time to time, this week I had a special in-studio performance by Levator. Strickly speaking, Levator IS Sky Lynn (on guitar, vocals & effects), who, in the past, has been joined by various other friends and collaborators. This time she was joined by Rando Skrasek on drums, who provided an excellent back-beat for her carefully constructed and beautifully layered songs. Comparisons to Galaxie 500 or Mazzy Star are possible, but Sky manages to reach sonic textures that skirt the edge of Sonic Youth proportions, and has other, more sparse moments that conjur a singer-songwriter motif. But to really get a feel for what I’m talking about, you just gotta tune in.

Dance The Afternoon Away (Phase I Episode Episode 096)
This week, I decided to dance the afternoon away, Blasphuphmus style! We brought out all the hits, new and old, and rock the fuckin’ house… for an hour. I literally scare my co-workers by dancing in the booth, and even manage to find a groove to …Worms and Jandek, strangely enough (who was awesome live, by the way). Highlights include me missing my cue transitioning between the first two songs, mis-pronoucing the name of a Hungarian band, and working the Minutemen into a show where they would otherwise feel severely out of place. Let’s Rollplay: Scraetch Grillson Part II (KPSU Phase I Episode 095)
Scraetch joins me again for an hour full of +1 Action! Since the fans demanded it, I let her come in again and do all the hard work while I sat there reading up on some of the new beasties included in the Monster Manual. This episode is all about rolling the 12 sided dice, and to help accomodate that we bust out the hits new and old, guarenteed to cause you to level up before the end of the hour. Highlights include a heroic journey on Timeship Earth, another great (but slightly unplayable) track by my new favorite band Cold Pizza, the irrepressible (and amazingly awesome) Roches, and everyone’s favorite Television song. This adventure’s going to be novelized and published by Tor by the end of the year, but until then you can download it here, today, right NOW!

Scraetch Grillson (KPSU Phase I Episode 094)
New trainee and good friend Scraetch Grillson came down to the station to run a full hour of my show, where she picked the hits and I made slightly strange comments about her being my Helper Monkey. Obligatory “bands that we’re friends with” made the cut for this show, peppered with all the usual stuff that we listen to while drinking. Plus: this show comes with instructions! Tune in, won’t you?

Instru-Mentals (KPSU Phase I Episode 093)
This week I decided to locate all my favorite instrumentals by bands that aren’t necessarily known for them. While the obligatory Champs song is included, and some of the transitions are the clunkiest in radio history, after a while a groove starts to settle onto the show that I can really get into. With the sunny weather in mind, it’s best to sit back with a Corona in the grass somewhere when you’re listening to this one. At this time, the show was on from 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.

The Jeff Feuerzeig Interview (KPSU Phase I Episode 092)
At this time, our program was on from 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.
This week, as a special presentation, I ran an interview with Jeff Feuerzeig, director of the upcoming film, The Devil And Daniel Johnston. Jeff was kind enough to meet up with me on February 12th, and we talking about Daniel and his film. Intercut with the interview are some of my favorite Johnston tracks, spanning his career. This is a must for fan, or for people who are curious about the film.

Tim was kind enough to let me help him out with an episode of his show, Senior Citizens this week. Tim is one of the funniest people I know, and I’ve been a fan of his show for a while. Here’s a link. On this particular show, Tim & I read excerpts form Richard Brautigan’s collection of short stories, “Revenge Of The Lawn.” As usual, hilarity ensued.
This spawned talk of a cooking show, that I may also appear on. Keep your eyes here for more information about this coming (and pressing) show.

The-Front, LIVE! (Phase I, Episode 091)
My sound guy Jasun had been talking up a band that was touring through PDX from, of all places, Casper, WY. I was sceptical, but gave him the benefit of the doubt when he asked if they could play on my show. When he gave me a CDR of some of their stuff, I knew he was onto something. The-Front are unappologetically punk rock, blending elements of The Gits, Crimpshrine, Blatz, and a hundred other sources to write fun, original, and political songs. Coming from a town that actually drills for oil when it’s profietable, and from a town isolated in the middle of america, it’s no wonder they have a lot to say with their songs. 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.

Christian (KPSU Phase I Episode 090)
My buddy Christian and I often talk about records and music when we get together, so this week we decided to play records for Portland, too. I was just beginning to come down with a tragic illness during this show, so if I sound out of it, you know why.

DJ Revolting Earwig & Empress Earwig (KPSU Phase I Episode 088)
It’s been a while since Revolting Earwig came down to KPSU, and this week he brought his female counterpart.
I started the show solo with a decidedly strange bent to things, but once they showed up we start to get the rock on, pausing only long enough to be a little freaked out by a “normal” Charles Manson song, & to paint the town brown when all is said and done.
This is the show that marks the beginning of my new love affair with This Heat. Holy shit, they’re amaaaaaaazing! (At this time we were on the air from 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.)

Cuidado (Phase I, Episode 087)
Today’s show was all about rock: I picked out the rockin’-est songs I could think of (most of which have been stuck in my head this week for various reasons), and cranked up the volume at KPSU. This also features my all-time new favorite band ever (The Reigning Sound), and my all time favorite song by them (“Time Bomb High School”). This show was pretty much designed to keep me dancing and bopping while I hung out at the station for an hour, and that’s no small feat. If you need to shake your ass, try this show on for size. 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.

The VD Show (KPSU Phase I Episode 086)
Since today is VD, I decided to send an audio Valentine Card to the world with this schizophrenic and totally rockin’ show. While the first half is just… uhm… “interesting” (to quote some of my friends with a lower tolerance for experimental music), it builds to a triumphant finish with some top-notch metal. This one is for the history books, or at least the CIA’s files since the Number Stations Recording is in there. Such is life…

The Return of Holden Craft! (KPSU Phase I Episode 085)
At this time, our program was on the air from 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.
Holden Craft used to be a regular fixture of the old “Church Of Blasphuphmus” show on KWVA in Eugene, and it was with fanfare and celebration that he was able to join me again for this special broadcast presentation. While his crow’s feet were only slightly more pronounced than they were in 1998, our banter was just a goofy and unscripted as it was back then. This one is for the old fans, who enjoyed the only news reports, or our slicing up on the Taco Bell Chiuauha on air. Thanks for joining me, buddy.

Feeling Frisky (Phase I Episode 083)
Today I was feeling a little frisky, so all the songs are ones I think of (or want to listen to) when I’m in the mood. I think it worked pretty well, and I had some of the best transitions I’ve done in quite a while. I’m thinking about cutting out the voice overs and commercials and trying out this show the next time I get a pair of bedroom eyes from someone. 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.

Avery Bell, LIVE! (Phase I Episode Episode 082)
No strangers to KPSU, Avery Bell has survived being transplanted from Eugene to Portland and a personnel change to release a self-titled album that hits the spot, and make a small name for themselves around town, too. Going back into the studio for another round of recording, the band offered to join the two-time club and do another performance for me today. An interview ensued. This also marked the first show that my new engineer, Jasun, kicked out the jams in a big way. A new era of the Church is underway, I can feel it… 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.

What started out as me just wanting to hear a few songs I liked before doing my show became a whole theme show: Rock ‘n’ Roll Songs I Wish I Heard On The Radio More Often. All these songs kick extrordinary amounts of ass in my opinion, and all come from an ear of music that I’m quite fond of. Plus, I even played a request (though it didn’t entirely fit the theme). All in all, the kind of show I’d like to do more often. 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.

If If, Was Was… Live! (Phase I Episode 078)
“Special Two-Week Christmas Gift To Portland”
Featured Artist: If If, Was Was…
As part two of my Christmas Gift to the city of Portland, If If, Was Was… joins me at KPSU for some lo-fi rock music the likes of which you’ve never heard before. Slowly making a name for himself around PDX by playing at Billy Rays dive, he has an ear for songcraft that is unique unto itself, while being careful to pay tribute to everything the he, himself, was weened on. But unlike a lot of singer-songwriters on the market these days, he has a sense of humor that gives him an edge; the CD he’s released of home-recorded tracks is entitled, “Another Word For Thesaurus,” and that alone makes it – and his music – quite entertaining. Joining us for this performance are his brother Thomas on drums, and their friend Megan on Violin. Tune in for some fun. (This show aired from 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.)

Gordon Taylor, Live! (Phase I Episode 077)
“Special Two-Week Christmas Gift To Portland”
As part of my Christmas Gift to the city of Portland, I’ve lined up two weeks of music on my show guaranteed to knock your socks off. This week, I have the up-and-coming rock outfit, Gordon Taylor, risen out of the ashes of Rise Over Run and The Mayonaise vs. Venn Demonstrational. With beautiful lyrics and a slight wink-and-nod to some of the emo greats of the past, they have fantastic songs that will draw you in and make you want to dance. (This show aired from 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.)

Weird Rock (KPSU Phase I Episode 076)
I have to admit, this is one of my more schizophrenic shows, and I had an extremely fun time doing this one. If you can imagine, me rockin’ out for the entire hour, by myself, then that’ll give you an idea of what I’m talking about. Hooray For Tuesdays w/ DJ Debeers, aka The Diamondkutta (KPSU Phase I Episode 073)
For this show, I did a special presentation of an old KPSU standard, “Hooray For Tuesdays,” with DJ Debeers, aka The Diamondkutta. Debeers was the backbone of KPSU for a long time, and the host of “Live Friday” for almost three years. He’s also extremely active in the PDX-Pop scene locally, and has been an indie-rock mover and shaker for quite some time. For this show, Debeers presented some of his new favorite indie-rock hits in a pre-packaged show he did at home. This may be a recurring feature, so stay tuned for future shows. At this time our show was on from 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.

The Undoing Of David Wright, LIVE! (KPSU Phase I Episode 060)
Please join me for a special “Church of Blasphuphmus” broadcast as we host The Undoing of David Wright for the first half hour, who play a unique blend of synth and math rock whose latest release, We Dig With Fingers Crossed, is a rock opera in the best possible way, discussing grave robbing and murder that occurred in the late 1800s. For the second half hour, the band will pick out songs by some of their favorite bands and comrades. It should prove to be a great show for those who were waiting for me to play something non-garage-y. 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.

The Frasier Fantasy w/ Katie (KPSU Phase I Episode 047)
This show is from near the end of my first full year at KPSU, and by this point, I was deep into my Nuggets / 60’s rock phase as a DJ. My friend DJ Revolting Earwig had turned me on to the Nuggets boxed set (both Vol. 1 & 2), right around the time picked up Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, Love & The Great Society. The ’60’s were starting to become my favorite period of music, and almost as suddenly as my show was cut down to a single hour, it completely switched to all-Nuggets, all the time.
I became extremely systematic about my music consumption during this period, and started tracking down all the bands on these comps at the library, and in the KPSU catalog. (At the time, KPSU had a huge CD catalog of ’60’s music.) I saw this particular strain of the ’60’s to be the precursor of punk, and while this is not a new observation (the original Nuggets record used the word “punk” to describe this era), to me it felt like a revelation. I did all I could to become knowledgeable, and in many ways – to this very day – I find this era endlessly vital. There are always new discoveries to be made, and new sounds to immerse myself in.
One common practice that I regularly indulged in while at KPSU was new DJ training, and during this show I went through the process with my friend, Katie. I was a little sad to find that she never got past the apprenticing phase, as I would have loved to hear a show that she regularly hosted. However, we got to do this show together, and now that she no longer lives in the area, this is really the only reminder of her that I have.
This is a pre-podcast era show, as was transferred from a Mini-Disc recording I made of the program. The mix on this show is pretty great, and contains some of my favorite musical gems. I also find it interesting that this show comes from a time when I did four, 15 minute blocks, instead of three, 20 minute blocks. Oh, how things have changed. At this time, our program was on 5 P.M. – 6 P.M.
Enjoy!

Christmas In The Stars (Phase I Episode 026)
In this early KPSU show, what you get here is your average show from this period (heavy on the punk music) with occasional additions from the amazing Christmas In The Stars album, a fave at KPSU. I had just found it, and felt the need to inflict it upon the listeners. Other than that, it’s an average show.
I did include some other holiday-ish tunes, but this is merely a music show. But it works perfect this time of year, as the annoying is only occasional, and the bulk of what you hear is just straight up music. It’s the kind of holiday show I would like if other stations didn’t just cave in and play only holiday stuff.
So, nothing fancy. Just more music from Blasphuphmus Radio. (This show was originally on from 4 P.M. – 6 P.M.)
